The visual impressions of the vastness of nature were of great significance to the young Smorenburg. But the confrontation with the extravagance of the Surrealists and the mysterious fantasies of the Symbolists also inspired him and set the tone for his personal dream images that he would later shape in monumental paintings. One-of-a-kind ART, created by Herman Smorenburg.
About the Artist:
Herman Smorenburg was born in Alkmaar (1958). After his art study in Amsterdam, he studied the classical technique of glazing over a monochrome underground painting. This resulted in a manner of working which is characterized by great subtlety of color effect and delicate degrees of light and shadow. His themes are determined by mythical and visionary landscapes, sometimes with architectural elements which point to a bygone era. Mainly female figures populate the world of his dreams. They invite the onlooker to step into the desolate landscapes and to experience the silence and serenity of his dreams. His interest in the workings of consciousness in relation to the subconscious was aroused forever. From childhood to the present day, the inner quest of man for his origin and destination has been central in both his life and his art.
